The UW Medicine Research Information Technology (RIT) team supports technology integration between investigators and the research enterprise including access to data, integration into the EHR, and support for clinical research.

We Are Here For Researchers

Research IT supports investigators directly or indirectly. If you are running a study and need access to data, support for a clinical study using clinical systems, integrating a digital health intervention with UW Medicine, or capturing study data, please research out to us using the intake below. We also provide an array of training opportunities for investigators such as Epic, REDCap, and more.

We can help with:

Get Access to UW Data

Self service access –  ITHS Leaf is an open source, clinical data browser and analytics engine. Leaf has served nearly 400 investigators with access to millions of patient records.

Speak with a data consultant – You can meet with a data consultant on a fee for service basis.

Research Support IT Services

Under the RIT umbrella, there are various groups working collaboratively to support clinical transformation research; these groups include:

Data Services

Whether you are ready to request specific clinical data or just want to find out what’s feasible for your study, we can help.

REDCap Services

Research IT hosts and administers the Institute of Translation Health Sciences (ITHS) REDCap instance.

RIT Applications

The Research IT applications team provides support of UW Medicine’s EHR systems (Epic, OnCore and Vestigo) to clinicians, researchers, and study teams.

Solutions Development

The Innovation and Engineering team builds new technologies to support biomedical research across the range of activities at the University of Washington.

Systems Engineering

Researchers have unique needs when it comes to hardware, software and access to UW Medicine data.

Training Development

RIT Hosts a Learning Management System that houses training on using OnCore for Clinical Trials Management,  Epic for research purposes and more.

Our Partners and Supported Centers

Research IT collaborates closely with the Department of BIME, UW Medicine ITS, our CTSA (ITHS, the Institute of Translational Health Sciences), the Health Sciences Library, the UW Medicine Office of Research and Graduate Education, the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center, the research IT groups at Seattle Children’s and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Tools Made For Research

RIT manages and maintains many applications used for research. Our REDCap installation has one of the largest user base in the country. We also created and support the innovative LEAF Application allowing discovery of EHR data via the application.

Epic Research Module

Epic is the primary Electronic Medical Records system for UW Medicine. The Epic Research Module is research specific functionalities and features to support patient care and medical research.

OnCore
CTMS

Research IT supports Clinical Trials Management System (OnCore and EDC) system infrastructure and reporting. These services include performing installations, upgrades, as well as, troubleshooting web, application and database servers.

Vestigo

Vestigo is an application for the Consortium’s (UW med, FH, SCCA) pharmacies providing for inventory management, compliance monitoring and reporting, and real-time integration with the OnCore API.

TREE

The ITHS-developed Translational Research Education Engine (TREE) learning management system offers educational opportunities and content hosting services for the WWAMI region, CTSA Program, and the greater clinical and translational science community. TREE provides a user-friendly platform that offers an engaging, interactive learner experience.

REDCap

Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a rapidly evolving web tool used for creating electronic data collection instruments developed by researchers for researchers.

LEAF

Leaf is an open source web application for querying clinical data. Live for UW Medicine QI/Research investigators and allows users to query clinical databases built with nearly any data model for cohort identification and data extraction.

RISE

RISE is a web application designed to serve as a common tracking platform for programs and services across ITHS. RISE allows ITHS staff to enter data and track people, projects, services and events related to CTSA activities across all program areas.

TRU Scheduler

The TRU (Translational Research Unit) calendar is a web-based application built to meet the specific calendaring and scheduling requirements of an organization providing Clinical Resources.

Research IT Governance

We participate in numerous governance committees to provide a voice for research, including use of data and how we make it available to investigators and 3rd parties (including any use by commercial entities).

Support governance, policy development and operations of Epic Research use.

Lead Clinical Research Informatics Tier II IT Governance Committee.
