About Research IT

We report jointly to School through BIME and UW Medicine ITS supporting investigation at UW Medicine using technology. 

Who We Are

Established in 2015, our diverse team is made up of experts in both data and computing from a wide variety of domains and includes 3 Faculty, 30 FTE, and 3 trainees. We have Participated in ~$200M in federally funded research projects:

Executive leadership

Sean Mooney, PhD

Chief Research Information Officer, UW Medicine. Associate Director, National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC). Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education 

Dr. Sean Mooney is the Chief Research Information Officer (CRIO) of UW Medicine and a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education at the University of Washington. As CRIO, he leads the growing Research Information Technology team and provides strategic vision to the development of new platforms that leverage large clinical datasets. 

Mike Middlebrooks

Mike Middlebrooks is an Information Technology leader who builds successful teams by encouraging highly collaborative environments and leveraging each individual’s core strengths. With over 20 years of IT leadership experience in public and private sectors, Mike has expertise in IT operations and support, systems engineering, staff development, and team management. 

Mike has been with the UW School of Medicine since 2003, serving in a variety of progressive IT leadership roles at the clinical department, Dean’s Office, and School levels. In his current position as Director of Information Technology for the School of Medicine, Mike represents the school on IT issues and matters across UW entities and serves on various standing committees at the UW Medicine and campus levels.  In addition to this role, Mike is currently serving as the Interim Director of Research IT.
