Custom Applications For Your Study Team

We can build and deploy custom software to support your data workflow that integrate into enterprise systems that run on secure hardware or cloud infrastructure.

Our Services

With a strong track record of delivering secure, compliant tools, Research IT empowers researchers by integrating solutions across the UW Medicine ecosystem.

Accelerating Discovery Through Custom Tools

Purpose-built applications like Leaf accelerate cohort discovery by enabling researchers to browse and request IRB-approved datasets directly from the UW Medicine electronic health record (EHR).

Research Administration Tools

Research IT empowers research support staff by building automations that streamline operations and expand team capacity. Tools like RISE support NIH reporting for the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), while the TRU Scheduler simplifies coordination of study protocols leveraging the Translational Research Unit’s clinical resources.

Applications for Study Management

Need a custom-built application for your study? Research IT develops secure, compliant applications built specifically for research—from short-term pilot tools to participant-facing apps designed to test technological interventions. In some cases, the study is the application.

Automated Data & Imaging Pipelines

As research enters the big data era, the ability to transform raw information into insight is critical. Research IT empowers researchers to harness this potential—designing pipelines, enabling AI, and driving discovery at scale.

We empower researchers with the IT tools and data analysis to improve human health.

The Impact of Research IT Applications on Discovery at UW and UW Medicine

Leaf

Real-Time Cohort Discovery for Investigators

Leaf is a self-service application that enables UW investigators to query the UW Medicine electronic health record (EHR) system through a user-friendly interface. Unlike many cohort discovery tools, Leaf interacts directly with live clinical data, allowing researchers to generate reports in real time.

Investigators can use Leaf to explore a wide range of patient population insights, including medical and demographic data, clinical workflows, and department-level statistics. The tool supports both de-identified and identifiable datasets. Access to identified data requires Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for human subjects research.

TRU Scheduler

The TRU (Translational Research Unit) calendar is a web based application built to meet the specific calendaring and scheduling requirements of an organization providing Clinical Resources to researchers such as Labs, Beds and Nurse activities such as the services provided by the ITHS.

RISE Database

RISE is an activity tracking system for institutions supporting medical researchers and staff. Administrators and Providers can track activities in the form of Projects, notes, events and services as well as maintain a record of the regulatory and reporting information specific to medical research.

Rates

The UW has Internal and External billing rates based on the Institution supported and their organizations status and funding source of the project.

Internal UW Rate

With UW Worktags

$150

External Rate

No UW Budget Number

$200

Industry Rate

Internal With Industry

$270

We invoice in the first week of the month for work done in the previous month. This amount will be automatically deducted from the supplied worktag. The billing contact you supply before beginning a consultation will get an invoice (from UW Central Billing) at that time, but generally doesn't have to do a thing.
