UW Medicine Research IT maintains computing resources available for IRB Approved research and is specifically staffed to support researchers safely and effectively doing data science with UW Medicine’s own protected health information. We can provide researchers with access to big storage, lots of CPU, and have recently begun expanding our GPU hardware to support modern LLM and CNN research efforts.

    System Design & Engineering

    Every research effort is unique and Research IT can help you plan what a hosted server or application solution might look like within the context of your specific study goals.  We support a more traditional mode of IT in hosting applications but can also create tailored and flexible environments that can provide access the full range of compute options used in modern data science including datacenter class GPUs.

    Application Hosting and Ongoing System Maintenance

    Research IT provides traditional cloud application hosting at competitive prices and serves as the custodian for the lifecycle of any application or server we host. Applications are housed on a high-availability hardware cluster built on VMware vSphere to ensure maximum uptime. Maintaining an aggressive stance when it comes to security is critical and Research IT’s infrastructure team will proactively coordinate any maintenance that might need to happen on either an application or Operating System level as new vulnerabilities emerge and require attention. Hosting with Research IT means your application falls under UW Medicine’s own extensive and always active security vulnerability assessment program.

    The UW has Internal and External billing rates based on the Institution supported and their organizations status and funding source of the project.

    We invoice in the first week of the month for work done in the previous month. This amount will be automatically deducted from the supplied worktag. The billing contact you supply before beginning a consultation will get an invoice (from UW Central Billing) at that time, but generally doesn't have to do a thing.
